Looks like a nuclear explosion, doesn't it? Well, it is - it's the sun setting over Okaloosa Island last Saturday evening. The storm surge took out parts of Highway 98 on the island so we haven't been down there yet to see how much of the beach is left. Ivan wiped-out most of the dunes last year and now everytime a hurricane or tropical storm comes in (pretty often lately - 3 this year), we lose parts of the highway to the storm surge flowing across from the Gulf of Mexico to Choctawhatchee Bay. But the good news is two of four lanes re-opened this afternoon and it won't be long before it's all rebuilt because the road crews are getting so much practice. . .

We dodged the bullet again - Katrina struck just east of New Orleans. We had a lot of wind, some rain, and no damage. But after riding out Ivan last year, I don't envy the folks in Louisana and Mississippi who were in Katrina's path.
Most businesses in Fort Walton Beach (including my employer) were closed today. I used the time to build a gallery of our trip to Europe. See it here.
Pssst. . . There's a bonus photo of Gina hidden in a link amongst the introductory text - see if you can find it.

Category 5 Hurricane Katrina is inbound, with the current track predicting a direct hit on New Orleans. We're staying put, even though winds here in Fort Walton Beach will likely top 70 mph tomorrow afternoon. We are also expecting a considerable storm surge. Our prayers to the people of New Orleans - with winds currently topping 175mph, Katrina looks to be the storm of the century.
On a side note, we returned from a 14-day trip to Scotland, Germany, and England last Monday. My Fuji Finepix 3800 died, so I replaced it with a smaller, more compact Fuji Finepix A350, mostly because I could use the 128mb XD memory card I bought for the 3800 in the A350. I'm still learning how to use the A350, so some of the photos from our vacation were less than satisfying, but I will post a gallery of the best soon. Because of the expected winds tomorrow its likely we won't be going in to work, so hopefully I can have the gallery posted by tomorrow afternoon.
Hey, maybe I'll even finish the Hawaii 2003 gallery too. . .
I archived July - you can see it here.
